VYTIS

The Lithuanian State emblem is one of the oldest emblems in Europe. It is Vytis. A white armoured rider with a shield on its left shoulder, riding a white horse and having a sword prepared for a stab, is on the red background of the emblem.
The symbols of the emblem are taken from the dukes’ portrait stamps, as a rider in Lithuania was a symbol of a ruler. Simonas Daukantas created the term “Vytis” in the 19th century. He used this term for Lithuanian noblemen and riders.
Since the 15th century the composition of the emblem has not changed: a silver armoured rider with a sword above his head and a blue shield with a double golden cross on the left shoulder is in the red field. A red colour meant earthly values: life, courage, blood. A blue one is for emotional values: heaven, divine wisdom and intelligence. A rider is ready for the first jump - defence.
In 1569 when Lithuanian-Poland state was formed after Lublin union, a rider’s image changed: a defender became an enemy prosecutor.
On February 16, 1918 when the restoration of Lithuanian state was proclaimed, the State emblem became an emblem version created by A.Zmuidzinavicius.
On March 11, 1990 the Supreme Council of the Lithuanian republic legalized Lithuanian historical State emblem - Vytis. It became the symbol of the transitional period and underlined that Lithuania continued pre-war traditions.
