HISTORY OF THE MUSEUM

The unique Horse Museum located 8 km outside Anyksciai is the only of its kind in Lithuania. The importance of the horse to the economy and agriculture of Lithuania is the main topic of the exhibits collected in the Museum.
The Museum was founded on the initiative of professor of agronomy Petras Vasinauskas (1906-1995). He became famous after his horse journey across Lithuania. Having in mind the importance of the horse, P.Vasinauskas together with journalist Vladas Vaicekauskas in 1975 made the journey of 1051 km. They travelled across Lithuanian roads for 43 days. Horse Beris was pulling “lineika”.
The professor has chosen Anyksciai because a lot of tourists come here. The organizing council was made, the construction of the Museum started, exhibits were collected in Lithuania. The Museum was opened on June 10, 1978 and the folk festival “Run, Stallion, Run” was organized.
Since 1992 Horse Museum became a branch of A.Baranauskas and A.Vienuolis-Zukauskas Memorial Museum.
The Museum contains exhibits-horses alive. Anyksciai agricultural school takes care of them and also supports with riding horses or taking a ride in a horse- carriage. Eleven buildings belong to the Museum. More than 20000 tourists visit this unique Museum every year.
